The second Hack for Locals was a continuation of a offline event that took place in 2019 in Kharkiv.
Originally planned as a hackathon that will take place at several offline-locations allover Ukraine, due to the COVID-19 restrictions the concept was ad hoc changed to a completely online-event. Organised jointly with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, the changed format of the concept allowed more than 360 participants from all over Ukraine to introduce their innovative solutions to solve urgent problems of Ukrainian communities allowing them to become safer and more secure.
A variety of ideas, from a range of inclusive projects to support people with disabilities, promote waste management and support physical and mental wellbeing, to projects on coordinated safety services, evacuation plan development, and projects for training and alerting the population during emergencies were introduced during the first day of the event inbreathing the key partner – the Ministry – to provide further support to the development and implementation of the solutions.
The participants have benefited not only from joint work on the projects, exchanging the ideas and receiving awards: despite the pandemic, a mentorship distance support on various characteristics of the solutions was also ensured. Moreover, in the framework of the hackathon, a dedicated series of workshops with representative of various oblasts and groups (incl. vulnerable groups) took place aimed to provide the participants with specific examples, requests, needs or “pains” that could be solved with their digital solutions.

The activity was implemented in the framework of the United Nations Recovery and Peacebuilding Programme (UN RPP).
