The project “Green light for cycling in hromadas” was aimed to promote cycling as a sustainable, environmentally friendly and healthy way of mobility, an alternative to traditional transport. It contained several components, and included a campaign aimed to promote cycling among schoolchildren and young people in different hromadas, including a series of planned workshops; design and construction of cycling infrastructure in communities.
The bike tour, which started the project, took place in an amalgamated hromada in Zhytomyr Oblast. More than 300 cyclists, the community of Zhytomyr Oblast, and most importantly – a large number of children and youth took part in it. It was attended by Hennadiy Zubko, Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Regional Development, Construction and Housing of Ukraine, Berend de Groot, Head of Cooperation Programs of the EU Delegation, Yantomas Hiemstra, UNDP Director in Ukraine, as well as representatives of donor programmes and international partners who actively support decentralisation reform in Ukraine. During the bike tour, several stops were organised so that participants could visit a new hub school and a cultural centre for young people.

The event was organised within the framework of U-LEAD with Europe: Ukraine – Local Empowerment, Accountability and Development Programme, a multi-donor action of the European Union and its member states Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Poland and Sweden. The Programme cooperates with MinRegion in establishment of a multilevel governance system that is transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of citizens.
